What I Learned About Categories and Tags

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Categories are the main hierarchy of your website. They cover the overarching topics that your site is structured around. The categories are the foundation for SEO and tags are useful for reader to find and search for content on your site. You should have a small amount of categories or else your site will be watered down and spread thin. A large amount of categories also makes it hard for search engines to choose what to display and for readers to find what they are looking for.

For my blog, About A Native, I plan to use categories to organize the different parts of my lived experience. Some categories may focus on growing up on the reservation, culture and identity, family and kinship, life after moving away from the reservation, and personal growth. Because my blog will cover many different experiences, these categories will help readers find the topics that interest them most.

I plan to use tags for more specific themes that may appear across several categories, such as grief, resilience, education, racism, generational trauma, mental health, and Indigenous identity. Using categories and tags together will help keep my blog organized while also showing how many of these experiences overlap and connect with one another.
